John D. Diffenbaugh (1829-1903) was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and
died in Freeport, Illinois. Beginning in about 1847, he served a three-year
apprenticeship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to learn the confectionery trade before
returning to Lancaster to oversee a cotton mill. He married Rachel Diffenbaugh (b.
Kahley) in Lancaster in 1854, and in 1856 they moved to Freeport, Illinois, where he
opened several large and successful confectionery and grocery stores. First a member of
the Embury Methodist Episcopal Church, he subsequently joined the United Brethren
Church. In June 1886, he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to obtain a copy of
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Based on the records
available, we have found no further information concerning his involvement with
Christian Science.
