George H. Durfee

George H. Durfee (1838-1928) was born in Somerset, New York, and died in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a Civil War veteran, serving in Company K of the Minnesota 1st regiment. After the Civil War, he moved to Washington, D.C., and worked as a clerk at the War Department. Durfee, along with his wife, Helen, and sister-in-law, Mary, studied with Mary Baker Eddy in early 1882, when Eddy and her husband, Asa G. Eddy, visited Washington, D.C. There is no record of Durfee joining the Christian Scientist Association or the Church. In 1885, his wife filed for divorce, and shortly after he removed to Minnesota where he first served as the Register of Deeds for Cook County. In 1898, he was elected as judge of probate for Cook County, Minnesota, a position he held until 1927.
