Hellen J. Durfee (1850-1926) was born in Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and
died in Bisbee, Arizona. She lived in Washington, D.C., for almost 30 years, where she
worked as a clerk in the Treasury Department. Durfee, along with her husband, George,
and sister, Mary, studied with Mary Baker Eddy in early 1882 when Eddy and her husband,
Asa G. Eddy, visited Washington, D.C. There is no record of Durfee joining the Christian
Scientist Association or the Church. In 1885, Hellen filed for divorce from her
husband.
