Mary Ellis (1808-1890), a friend of Mary Baker Eddy's, was born in
Portland, Maine, and lived in Swampscott, Massachusetts. Eddy lived with Mary Ellis and
her son, Fred, in Swampscott in 1866. While living with them, Eddy spent most of her
time writing and at the end of each day would read to the Ellises what she had written.
After Eddy had moved out and begun teaching, they stayed in touch for a few years,
writing regularly to each other.
