Mary E. Evans (b. Hopkins) (1836-1922) was born in Salisbury, Connecticut, and died in Bement, Illinois. She married James C. Evans, a lumber dealer and veteran of the Mexican-American War, in Winchester, Illinois, in 1852. In 1856 they moved to a farm near Bement, and in 1870 they moved into town. Evans studied Christian Science with Martha H. Bogue, a student of Mary Baker Eddy. She joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 6, 1895. Her daughter, Ellen G. McKay (b. Evans), and granddaughter, Georgia D. Osgood (b. McKay), were also members. Evans worked as a Christian Science practitioner for a number of years.
