James Walter Fertig (1859-1922) was born in Elizabeth, Indiana, and died
in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1902, he married Annie M. Fertig (b. Mead) in Chicago,
Illinois. Fertig was a schoolteacher at the Winchester Normal School in Ohio before
becoming vice-president of Salina Normal University in Salina, Kansas. He later worked
for the
Normal Register in Salina before becoming head of the
education department of the Middle Tennessee State Normal School. He wrote from Salina
in 1886 to request a copy of
Science and Health with Key to the
Scriptures to review in a newspaper.
