Emily S. C. Finch (b. Chapman) (1833-1903) was born in Westfield, Massachusetts, and died in Chicago, Illinois. She moved with her family to Akron, Ohio, by 1850 and to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, by 1860. There she married Henry M. Finch, an attorney, in 1861. He died in 1884, and Emily moved into the household of her twin sister, Julia S. C. Warner (b. Chapman) in Milwaukee. They both became interested in Christian Science in the mid-1880s and studied with Mary Baker Eddy's student Jessie G. N. Clarke.
Emily was listed as a practitioner in The Christian Science Journal from 1897 to 1903, and Julia was listed from 1897 to 1910. Together they taught at the Milwaukee Christian Science Institute. Emily, along with her daughter Emily Swift Finch, and Julia, along with her daughter Louise B. Warner, all joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 4, 1896. Julia's sons Lansing B. Warner and Martyn Finch Warner, who were also Clarke's students, joined on June 4, 1898. Louise, Lansing, and Martyn all became practitioners listed in the Journal. Emily, Julia, Lansing, and Martyn were all members of a Christian Science branch church in Milwaukee. Emily served as Second Reader of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the late 1890s. In 1899 Emily went through the first Normal class of the Board of Education. Sometime after 1900 Emily moved to Chicago. The family's involvement with Christian Science continued, and in 1944 Julia's grandson Lansing B. Warner, Jr., also joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
