A. J. (Alexis J.) Fishback (c.1830-1892) was born in Independence, Indiana, and died in Du Quoin, Illinois. He was a Universalist minister who attended the Eclectic Medical Institute (EMI) in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fishback withdrew from the Universalist church in 1865 and devoted his life to Spiritualism, preaching and lecturing across the Midwest. At the time he wrote to Mary Baker Eddy, he was ministering for the Brotherhood of Faithists and working as a Magnetic Healer. Although Fishback expressed an interest in Christian Science, there is no record of him studying with Eddy or uniting with the Church of Christ (Scientist).
