Jesse L. Fonda (1841-1925) was born in Pulaski, New York, and died in Oak Park, Illinois. He graduated from Chicago Theological Seminary in Chicago, Illinois, and was ordained as a minister in 1873. He married Martha J. Fonda (b. Smith) in 1874 in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and they moved to Morris, Minnesota. Fonda served as pastor of the Congregational church in Rantoul, Illinois, from 1885 to 1891.

The Fondas studied Christian Science with Alma S. Metcalf, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, and in 1897 they were living in Chicago, where Jesse was working as a Christian Science practitioner. The couple joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 1, 1898. They were members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois, followed by Third Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois, where Jesse served as First Reader. The Fondas moved to Oak Park in 1920. The couple were listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal, with Jesse listed as a Christian Science practitioner in Chicago from 1899 to 1923 and in Oak Park from 1924 until his death. He frequently contributed articles to Christian Science periodicals.
