Adnah K. Frain (1845-1929) was born in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and died in Palm Springs, California. He was a veteran of the American Civil War, serving as commissary sergeant in the Union Army in Company AFS of the 9th Regiment, Michigan Infantry. Frain earned his M.D. from Michigan Homeopathic Medical College in Lansing, Michigan, in 1873. That year he married his fellow student, Mary J. Frain (b. Goodell), in Wood, Ohio, and by 1880 they were living in Spencer, Iowa. Sometime between 1887 and 1892 they moved to Chicago, Illinois, where Frain was a member of the Chicago Electro-Medical Association and served as recording secretary of the World's Fair Club.
Frain was introduced to Christian Science around 1886, while working as a homeopathic physician with his wife. After talking to Christian Scientists and reading Mary Baker Eddy's Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, he felt that the religion was based on superstition, false statements, and erroneous premises. He continued to practice as a homeopathic physician until 1898 when, after failing to find a cure for his ailments, he turned to Christian Science and experienced healing. The Frains soon retired from medicine, and Adnah decided to devote himself to Christian Science, while Mary devoted herself to social work. Frain joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 2, 1900. He was one of the trustees of Fifth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois, and was chairman of the board of directors of Ninth Church of Christ, Scientist, Chicago, Illinois. The Frains moved to Los Angeles, California, sometime during the 1920s. Frain was listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as a Christian Science practitioner in Chicago from 1907 to 1923 and in Los Angeles from 1924 until his death.
