Sophia T. Gerry (b. Jones) (1838-1904) was born in Cooper, Maine, and
died in South Robbinston, Maine. By 1850 she was living in Calais, Maine, where she
married Elbridge J. Gerry, a blacksmith, in 1858. They settled in South Robbinston and
had ten children. In 1887 Gerry wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a copy of
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Several of the
Gerrys' children were also involved with Christian Science. Mabel Gerry Haviland (b.
Gerry) and Mary E. Brooks (b. Gerry) both studied with Eddy's student Laura V. Lathrop
and were members of the Church of Christ, Scientist, New York, New York, and of The
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston, joining in July 1896 and June 1901,
respectively. Kathleen "Katie" G. Oliver (b. Gerry) joined The First Church of Christ,
Scientist, Boston, in January 1898, and Edith J. Gerry joined in July 1893. Edith
studied Christian Science with Eddy's student Julia S. Bartlett, and according to a
testimony published in
The Christian Science Journal, she was
practicing Christian Science in South Robbinston as early as 1888. She was listed as a
practitioner in the
Journal in 1896 and 1897.
