Bertha Günther-Peterson (b. Günther) (1858-1938) was born in Kirn, Germany, and died in an unknown location. She married a physician in Germany, and was widowed while her daughters were young. Günther-Peterson became interested in Christian Science in 1894 after learning of the healing her friend, Marie Schon, had experienced. In 1896, she took a class in Christian Science in New York from Mary Baker Eddy's student, Laura V. Lathrop, during her first visit to the United States. She was a member of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, New York, New York, and joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1897.
Returning to Hannover, Germany, she began to hold worship services in her home in 1897, and was the first practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal under 'Germany' in this year. Günther-Peterson returned to the USA in 1899 to attend a Normal class. When it was cancelled, she was able to secure an appointment to visit Eddy at Pleasant View, where she presented an edition of a German Luther Bible on behalf of the newly-established Hannover church. During this meeting, Eddy gave her permission to teach even though she had not gone through Normal class, however she eventually did in 1906; the class was taught by Eugene H. Greene in the Board of Education of The First Church of Christ, Scientist. She was listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as a Christian Science teacher and practitioner in Hannover from 1900 until her passing in 1938.
