James A. Hall (1835-1893) was born in Jefferson, Maine, and died in
Syracuse, New York. He was a Union Army Brevet Brigadier General, who served during the
Civil War as commander of the 1st Battalion Maine Light Artillery and then became
commander of the 2nd United States Volunteer Infantry. In the summer and fall of 1871 he
embarked on a speaking tour of New England with Mary A. Livermore, a prominent leader in
the women's suffrage movement. On the tour they would debate the topic of women's
suffrage with Livermore speaking for and Hall against.
