Sophia W. Hallahan (b. Walworth) (1845-1920) was born in Newstead, New
York, and died in Covina, California. In 1863 she married William H. Knight, a railroad
engineer. They lived in several locations including Muskegon, Michigan; Chicago,
Illinois; Denver, Colorado; and Los Angeles, California. William died in 1892, and in
1900 she married John Hallahan, a conductor with the Southern Pacific railway, in Los
Angeles. After his death in 1903 she went to live with her daughter Edith C. Knight in
Covina. Hallahan was a lecturer on topics related to domestic science. She was active in
the Women's Christian Temperance Union and a charter member of the Friday Morning Club
in Los Angeles, California, and the Monday Afternoon Club in Covina. In 1887 Hallahan
(then Knight) wrote to Mary Baker Eddy inquiring about Christian Science teachers in her
area.
