Francis L. Harbin (b. Wootten) (1830-1909) was born in North Carolina and died in Columbus, Ohio. By 1850 she had moved with her family to Russell, Alabama, where she married Thomas M. Harbin, a medical doctor, in 1851. She moved frequently, living in Clarendon, South Carolina, by 1860; Indianapolis, Indiana, by 1870; Washington, D.C., by 1880; Portland, Oregon, by 1886; and finally, by 1898, in Columbus, Ohio. In the mid-1880s Harbin took a class in Portland from Julia Anderson Root, a student of Miranda R. Rice. Rice had been a student of Mary Baker Eddy but departed from her teachings by the time she taught Root. In 1886 Harbin wrote to Eddy directly indicating that she was interested in gaining more clarity about Christian Science and wished to order Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
