Francis L. Harbin (b. Wootten) (1830-1909) was born in North Carolina and
died in Columbus, Ohio. By 1850 she had moved with her family to Russell, Alabama, where
she married Thomas M. Harbin, a medical doctor, in 1851. She moved frequently, living in
Clarendon, South Carolina, by 1860; Indianapolis, Indiana, by 1870; Washington, D.C., by
1880; Portland, Oregon, by 1886; and finally, by 1898, in Columbus, Ohio. In the
mid-1880s Harbin took a class in Portland from Julia Anderson Root, a student of Miranda
R. Rice. Rice had been a student of Mary Baker Eddy but departed from her teachings by
the time she taught Root. In 1886 Harbin wrote to Eddy directly indicating that she was
interested in gaining more clarity about Christian Science and wished to order
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
