John W. Henney (1842-1926) was born in Manheim, Pennsylvania, and died in Freeport, Illinois. Considered a pioneer in the manufacturing of buggies and carriages, he was the founder and president of John W. Henney and Company, as well as the founder of the Henney Buggy Company. His family moved west in 1848. He began manufacturing wagons and carriages in Cedarville, Illinois, in 1868, when he married Agnes A. Henney (b. Bennethum), and he moved the business to Freeport in 1872. He served as president of the Freeport Board of Education for many years, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Henney wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1886 to order a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Based on the records available, we have found no further information concerning his involvement with Christian Science.
