Henry C. (Henry Clarke) Houghton (1837-1901) was born in Roxbury,
Massachusetts, and died at his home in New York City. After high school, he first
attended the State Normal School, Bridgewater, Massachusetts. He graduated with the
degree of M.D. from New York University in 1867, where he specialized in Otology
(anatomy and physiology of the ear). He was appointed to the staff of New York
Ophthalmic Hospital in 1868 and served there for thirty years as an aural surgeon and
lecturer on Otology.
