Clarissa T. Hurd (1837-1886) was born in, and most likely died in, New
York. She was the first wife of John Hurd, a businessman with mills at Bridgeport
(Connecticut), St. Regis Falls (New York), and Santa Clara (New York). Santa Clara was
founded by Hurd in 1888, and was named in honor of Clarissa. In January 1886, Clarissa
T. Hurd wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a copy of
Science and Health
with Key to the Scriptures.
