William Ireton (1845-1926) was born in Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and died in Sterling, Kansas. He worked as a farmer. He fought in the American Civil War, serving as a Private in Company H, 11th Regiment, Michigan Infantry of the Union Army, and he was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization composed of Civil War veterans. Ireton married Eudora M. Gleason, a public school teacher, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1868, and they moved to Kansas in 1871. He wrote to Mary Baker Eddy in 1886 inquiring about Christian Science. The Iretons united with the Church of Christ (also known as Churches of Christ) and were both members of the Peace Creek, Kansas, congregation at the time of their deaths.
