Charles A. Jones (1845-1925) was born and died in Bangor, Maine. He was a veteran of the American Civil War, serving as a private in the Union Army in Company G of the 4th Regiment, Maine Infantry. After the war, he worked as a messenger for the Eastern Express Company of Bangor before working in Portland, Maine, as a shipper for Loring, Short, and Harmon. Jones married Nancy L. Jones (b. Higgins) in Bangor in 1867. After Nancy passed away in 1890, he married Anne M. Jones (b. Damon) in Portland in 1892. He was appointed to the police force of Portland as a patrolman by the mayor and was made a sergeant in 1909. He retired from the force in 1911 and worked for the Fidelity Trust Company until he retired in 1924. Although his first wife Nancy was a student of Mary Baker Eddy and a member of the Christian Scientist Association, Jones does not appear to have been a Christian Scientist. As a Union Army veteran, Jones was a member of the Bosworth Post of the Grand Army of the Republic. He was a Freemason and also a member of the Portland Elks Lodge.
