Charles H.S. Kempton (1837-1891) was born in Edgartown, Massachusetts,
and died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He lived in New Bedford, Massachusetts, for many
years, working as a whaler, before moving to Chicago, Illinois, in the late 1870s. While
living in Chicago, he stayed with John Sherman, the younger brother of Mary Baker Eddy's
student, Bradford Sherman, and it is possible that this was the catalyst for Kempton's
brief interest in Christian Science. Kempton only stayed in Chicago for a few years
before moving to Milwaukee.
