Fred N. Ladd (1859-1934) was born and died in Concord, New Hampshire. In 1879 he began his career at the Loan and Trust Savings Bank in Concord, where he worked as a clerk, teller, banker, and ultimately as its treasurer. He married Carrie I. Ladd (b. Sleeper) in Concord in 1885. Ladd's mother and Mary Baker Eddy were second cousins and childhood friends, and he became acquainted with Eddy soon after she moved to her Pleasant View home in Concord in 1892. Beginning in 1898, Eddy employed Ladd to audit the books and accounts kept for her by her secretary Calvin A. Frye several times over several years. He went on to assist Eddy with other business, financial, investment, and property matters as well, and served as treasurer and trustee of the building fund for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Concord, New Hampshire.

In 1906 Ladd gave a newspaper interview contradicting speculations that Eddy was in poor health, and in 1907 he provided sworn affidavits on Eddy's behalf regarding her competence to manage her own affairs in the Next Friends lawsuit. He was also a member and/or director of several business and civic organizations, including the Concord Masonic Association, Wonolancet Outdoor Club, Beaver Meadow Golf Club, New Hampshire Historical Society, Red Cross, Concord Board of Trade, and the Boys' City Club, among others. In 1899 Ladd wrote to Eddy that his wife was receiving Christian Science treatment, and she went on to join The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 5, 1906. She also joined the First Church of Christ, Scientist, Concord, New Hampshire. The Ladds' daughter Phyllis B. McGuire (b. Ladd) also became a member of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, according to her obituary.
