R00022 Mary A. Livermore (1820-1905) was a prominent suffrage leader whose
support of women's rights was based on her belief that men and women are equal in the
eyes of God. After volunteering with the U.S. Sanitary Commission, which provided Union
soldiers with food, clothing, and medical care during the Civil War, Livermore made a
career as a lecturer on social reform, including women's suffrage and temperance. She
wrote about her experiences in her autobiography,
The Story of My
Life. She was married to Universalist minister Daniel P. Livermore.
