Mary S. Lowell (1850-1940) was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Both
she and her husband, James S. Lowell (1846-1919), were students of Mary Baker Eddy's,
studying with her in October 1876. She accompanied Mary Baker Eddy to Philadelphia in
early November 1876 for the Centennial Exposition. It is likely that the Lowells'
interest in Christian Science was short-lived, as their names do not appear in the
records of Eddy's church, founded about three years later.
