August Mann (1860-1939) was born in East Windsor, Connecticut, and died in Newton, Massachusetts. He was the older brother of Mary Baker Eddy's student Joseph G. Mann, whose healing through Christian Science treatment of an accidental gunshot wound in 1886 inspired him and many other family members to begin studying Christian Science. August began his career as a farm laborer. In 1888 he married Amanda K. Mann (b. Egling) in Alameda, California, and they settled in Broad Brook, Connecticut. August and Amanda both studied Christian Science with Eddy's student Mary E. Dunbar. They joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 1, 1893, and both were listed as Christian Science practitioners in The Christian Science Journal from 1894 until 1900. In March 1900 they joined Eddy's household staff at her Pleasant View home in Concord, New Hampshire. August was Eddy's farm superintendent and coachman, and Amanda was her dressmaker. They served in those capacities until January 1908, subsequently moving to Boston where August worked as a real estate superintendent. Their son, John Frederick Mann, joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 11, 1901, at the age of 12. Sometime after Amanda's death in 1935, August relocated to Newton.
