Matthew G. Mann (1842-1945) was born in Württemberg, Germany, and died in Tacoma, Washington. He emigrated to the United States in 1854 and graduated from New York University in 1869. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in April 1873. Mann married Minnie C. Mann (b. Cooper) in Puyallup, Washington, in 1876 and was appointed superintendent of instruction at the Puyallup Indian Reservation, later becoming a missionary to various reservations in the Northwest. Sometime between 1882 and 1885, the Manns were no longer married, and he married Mary F. (last name unknown) in 1890. They resided in Lewiston, Idaho. Mann studied Christian Science with Francis J. Fluno, a student of Mary Baker Eddy's, and decided to leave the Presbyterian church in March 1900. He was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Lewiston, Idaho, and joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 2, 1900. In 1901, at the invitation of Eddy, he took the Normal class taught by Edward A. Kimball in the Board of Education of the First Church of Christ, Scientist. He became a member of the General Association of Teachers in October 1904. After his wife passed away in 1905, he resided abroad in Berlin, Germany, from 1907-1909 and in England from 1909-1919, where he married Emilie "Amelia" A. Mann (b. Hergenhahn) in 1910. In 1920, the Manns settled in Tacoma. Mann was listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as a Christian Science teacher and practitioner from 1902-1940.
