Virginia A. Matthews (b. White) (1859-1951) was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, and died in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Sometime before 1870 she moved with her family to Chelsea, Massachusetts. Around 1877 she married Jack Matthews, and they lived in Waltham, Massachusetts. She was a dressmaker. By 1935 she was living in Pine Castle, Florida, and around 1936 she went to live in her daughter's household in Orangeburg. Matthews studied Christian Science with Clara E. Choate, one of Mary Baker Eddy's students, and joined the Church of Christ (Scientist) in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 21, 1886. Her mother, Harriet L. White (b. Goodwin), also joined the church at the same time. Matthews did welfare work and taught a Bible class in the Lutheran church in Orangeburg for many years.
