Earle McEwen (1857-1939) was born in Ulster, Iowa, and died in Mason
City, Iowa. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, in 1881
and worked as a homeopathic physician. He started his own practice in Mason City in 1887
and married Mary L. McEwen (b. Root) in Cerro Gordo, Iowa, in 1889. McEwen became
interested in Christian Science during the winter of 1886/87 and attended various
lectures in Chicago. Although he intended to study with Mary Baker Eddy, there is no
record of him doing so. The McEwens were members of the Congregational Church.
