Earle McEwen (1857-1939) was born in Ulster, Iowa, and died in Mason City, Iowa. He graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in Chicago, Illinois, in 1881 and worked as a homeopathic physician. He started his own practice in Mason City in 1887 and married Mary L. McEwen (b. Root) in Cerro Gordo, Iowa, in 1889. McEwen became interested in Christian Science during the winter of 1886/87 and attended various lectures in Chicago. Although he intended to study with Mary Baker Eddy, there is no record of him doing so. The McEwens were members of the Congregational Church.
