
Mary A. McGrew (b. Chaney) (1867-1960) was born in Richland Grove,
Illinois, and died in Seattle, Washington. As a child she moved to Wahoo City, Nebraska,
and in 1884 she married Benjamin H. McGrew in Ainsworth, Nebraska. He was co-owner of a
hardware, dry goods, and sporting goods store in Ainsworth. Sometime prior to 1900 they
moved to Boise, Idaho, where McGrew became the bookkeeper for the State Land Department
and served as trustee of the Garfield Independent school district. Her husband worked as
an abstractor and was elected Ada County Treasurer. After her husband's death in 1907,
McGrew herself was elected Ada County Treasurer and served for two terms. In 1929 she
moved to Seattle to live with her sister Aurilla J. Ireton (b. Chaney) and remained
there for the rest of her life. She was a member of the P. E. O. Sisterhood and the
Congregational Church in Seattle. In 1886 McGrew wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order a
copy of
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures.
