R00024 William Dummer Northend (1823-1902) was a lawyer and politician who was
born in Byfield, Massachusetts, and died in Salem, Massachusetts. He was first educated
at the Dummer Academy (today known as The Governor's Academy) in Byfield and entered
Bowdoin College in 1839, graduating in 1843. He was admitted to the Essex County Bar in
1845 and spent 45 of his 57- year legal career practicing in Salem, Massachusetts. He
served in the Massachusetts Senate in 1861 and 1862. Northend represented George W.
Barry in Barry's 1877 lawsuit against Mary Baker Eddy.
