Charles A. Quincy Norton (c. 1841-1915) was born in Bangor, Maine, and died in Hartford, Connecticut. He worked as a picture framer before serving as a private for the Union army during the American Civil War, first in Company K of the 1st Regiment, Maine Cavalry, and again in Company K of the 7th Infantry, New Hampshire Regiment. He married Elizabeth "Lizzie" D. Norton (b. Drinkwater) in Bangor in 1864 and by 1870 was working as a physician in Patten, Maine. By 1880 the Nortons were living in Salisbury, Massachusetts, and they finally moved to Hartford around 1896. Norton retired as a physician and in 1898 was working as manager of The Hartford Graphophone Company.

Norton first met mesmerist Phineas Parkhurst Quimby in Bangor in 1859 when his mother was one of Quimby's patients. He was a medical student at the time and took notes on Quimby's methods. Norton admired him and thought Quimby was sincere and truly believed in his methods and theories; however, he was adamant about the distinctions between Quimby's teachings and Mary Baker Eddy's Christian Science and believed that the latter could not have been formulated from the former. Around 1889 he studied Christian Science with John F. Linscott, a student of Eddy. Norton was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hartford, Connecticut, and joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 1, 1900. He was listed in the directory of The Christian Science Journal as a Christian Science practitioner in Hartford from 1901 until his passing.
