
Lemuel Pope (1844-1929) was born in Kingston, Massachusetts, and died in Medford, Massachusetts. He enlisted in the United States Navy during the American Civil War and served as Acting Master for the Union navy. After the war he became a civil engineer, working as a supervisor on large state projects in Massachusetts and Washington. He married Lucelia A. Pope (b. Butters) in Wilmington, Massachusetts, in 1871, and by 1880 they were living in Hingham, Massachusetts. He studied Christian Science with Eldora O. Gragg, a student of Mary Baker Eddy. The Popes joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on January 1, 1898.
In 1899 Pope worked on macadamizing a portion of Pleasant Street in Concord, New Hampshire, where Eddy lived. In 1901 he was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Port Angeles, Washington. Around 1909 he was appointed a member of the district building inspection staff in North Adams, Massachusetts, and he retired around 1920. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic, Edward W. Kinsley Post in Boston, and was a commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, John Andrew Post in Hingham. Pope was a Freemason and a member of Mount Olivet Lodge in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
