John W. Reeder (1864-1937) was born in Canaan, Ohio, and died in an unknown location. By 1880 he had moved with his family to North Fairfield, Ohio. He attended Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Boston School of Theology, and Emerson School of Oratory. By the 1890s he was living in Boston, Massachusetts. He first studied Christian Science with Mary Baker Eddy's student Flavia Stickney Knapp. He then took two classes under the auspices of the Board of Education--the Normal in 1899 and the Obstetric in 1900. He joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on October 6, 1894. He was elected a First Member of that church on January 30, 1901, and served as its President in 1902 and 1903.

Reeder was also a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Roxbury, Massachusetts, and served as its First Reader from 1899 to 1902. Noted for his oratory skills, he was selected to read aloud Mary Baker Eddy's Messages to The Mother Church at the Communion Services in 1899, 1900, and 1901. Reeder was named as one of the codefendants in Josephine Curtis Woodbury's libel suit against Eddy filed in 1899. Woodbury sued Reeder for $25,000 for his involvement in delivering the 1899 Message to the Mother Church that was the subject of the suit. The suit was ultimately unsuccessful. Reeder was a practitioner listed in The Christian Science Journal from 1897 until 1921. He became a member of the General Association of Teachers in 1903 and of the Board of Missionaries in 1904. He continued to live in the Boston area until at least 1930.
