Clara H. Richards (1847-1928) was born in Fredericktown, Ohio, and died
in Boise, Idaho. As a young person she lived with her family in several locations in
Ohio, including Wayne Township, Middleburg Township, Berlin Township, and by 1880,
Bettsville, where she worked as a music teacher. By 1886 she was living in Mt. Vernon,
Ohio. By 1896 both of Richards's parents had passed away, and thereafter she moved to
Idaho where two of her brothers were living. From there she went on to Dyea, Alaska,
where she began working as the postmistress in November 1898. At the time Richards lived
there, Dyea was a boomtown in the midst of the Klondike Gold Rush. By 1910 Richards had
moved back to Idaho, living first in the household of one brother in Emmett, and by 1920
in the household of another brother in Boise. In 1886 Richards wrote to Mary Baker Eddy
that she had learned about Christian Science during a recent trip to Denver, Colorado,
and consequently wished to order a copy of
Science and Health with Key
to the Scriptures.
