Alvesta C. Scott-Browne (1841-1916) was born in Johnson, Vermont, and died in Brooklyn, New York. For nearly 20 years, she and her husband, Daniel L. Scott-Browne, owned and operated the Manhattan-based New York College of Phonography. At the College they taught classes on shorthand, stenography, and typing. In addition to teaching, they published several phonography textbooks and the periodical, Browne's Phonographic Monthly. Although she expressed an interest in studying Christian Science, there is no record of her doing so. She later became associated with Theosophy.
