Frederick J. Stetson (1845-1901) was born in Nobleboro, Maine, and died in New York, New York. In 1861, he was captured at the First Battle of Bull Run while serving in the 4th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He spent the next 16 months in Andersonville prison where he contracted rheumatic fever. After the war, he worked as a sea captain on his father's ship, the J. H. Stetson. In 1867, he married Augusta E. Simmons, who went on to study with Mary Baker Eddy. In 1876, ill health forced him to retire his captaincy and he spent the remainder of his life being supported by his wife.
