
Henry W. Stevens (1853-1935) was born and died in Concord, New Hampshire.
He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1875 and then from Boston University Law School
in 1877. He was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 1878 and began practicing law with
his father, Lyman D. Stevens. In 1879 Stevens formed the legal partnership Leach &
Stevens, in Concord, with Edward G. Leach. He married Ellen T. Stevens (b. Nelson) in
Exeter, New Hampshire, in 1881. Stevens served as Concord city solicitor in 1885 and
1886, alderman in 1894, member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 1887,
and Senate in 1901. Stevens was a board member and/or an officer of several New
Hampshire corporations as well as civic and philanthropic organizations, including the
Concord City Library and the New Hampshire Historical Society. He was a warden and
layman of St. Paul's Episcopal diocese and served as its treasurer for thirty years. In
the 1890s Mary Baker Eddy hired Stevens to consult upon and undertake various legal
matters on her behalf.
