Ella Peck Sweet (b. Peck) (1838-1919) was born in Ohio and died in
Denver, Colorado. By 1850 she had moved with her family to Pike County, Illinois, where
she married John L. Sweet, a merchant, in 1857. After marriage they resided in Barry
Township, Illinois. In 1881 they moved to Park County, Colorado, and Sweet's husband
went into the cattle business. He retired in 1900, whereupon they moved to Denver. In
1885 Sweet was introduced to Christian Science and experienced healing of several
longstanding ailments through reading
Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures. Later that year she studied Christian Science with Bradford
Sherman, one of Mary Baker Eddy's students, and in October 1887 Sweet herself took
Eddy's Normal class at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College and subsequently joined
the Christian Scientist Association. Sweet returned to Colorado and became active in
teaching and healing work in several locations, including Colorado Springs, Cañon
City, Salida, Buffalo Springs, and Denver. Sweet and her daughter Clara Sweet Brady (b.
Sweet) joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on
December 31, 1892. Sweet's husband joined on June 3, 1899, and another daughter, Lilla
Sweet League (b. Sweet) joined on March 31, 1894. Sweet was listed as a practitioner and
teacher in
The Christian Science Journal from 1890 until her
passing, and Clara was also listed as a practitioner for most of her adult life. Sweet
became a member of the General Association of Teachers in 1903 and worked in Eddy's
Pleasant View household for several months in 1904. She also served on the board of
directors of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Denver, in the early 1900s.
