Henry S. Swift III (1860-1905) was born in Florissant, Missouri, and died
in Rice Lake, Wisconsin. He was the son of Henry S. Swift Jr., who died fighting in the
American Civil War, and Mary C. Swift, a Christian Scientist. His family moved to
Wisconsin in the summer of 1861. Swift graduated from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio,
and also attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He worked as a
journalist and newspaper publisher. He eventually moved to Duluth, Minnesota, where he
worked as a mining broker and later became an agent for the A. H. Andrews company of
Chicago, Illinois. Around 1885, Swift became interested in Christian Science. Throughout
the years, he corresponded with Mary Baker Eddy and considered himself a Christian
Scientist, although he chose not to join the Church of Christ (Scientist).
