Stephen R. Thurston (1832-1907) was born in Searsport, Maine, and died in Lombard, Illinois. He graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine, and then worked as a schoolteacher in Searsport and Hallowell, Maine, before becoming a bookkeeper and then a fire insurance agent in Portland, Maine, with the firm of Loring & Thurston. In 1858 he married Annie F. Thurston (b. Carpenter) in Portland. Sometime in the 1870s they relocated to Lombard and Thurston worked as an insurance broker there. For many years he served as secretary of the Maine Mission Society for the Congregational churches. In 1887 Thurston wrote to Mary Baker Eddy to order some pamphlets on Christian Science on behalf of his wife.
