Alexander Hamilton Tilton (1804-1878), a wealthy textile mill owner, married Mary Baker Eddy's eldest sister, Abigail, on July 27, 1837. Throughout his life, he owned interests in several textile mills and is credited with being the inventor of the woven cloth known as "Tilton tweed." In addition to being a successful businessman, Tilton was known for his civic service and philanthropy. He struggled with illness later in life and died at his home in Tilton, New Hampshire, on August 16, 1878.
