Mary E. Tomlinson (1870-1907) was born in Fairport, New York, and died in Boston, Massachusetts. As a child she resided with her family in Hudson, Michigan, and in the 1890s she attended Buchtel College in Akron, Ohio. She studied Christian Science with Mary Baker Eddy's student Flavia Stickney Knapp and was listed as a practitioner in The Christian Science Journal from 1899 until her passing. Mary joined The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 3, 1897. She was the younger sister of Eddy's student Irving C. Tomlinson. He was active and important in the early Christian Science movement in several different capacities.

In 1897 Mary and Irving became the caretakers of the newly built Christian Science Hall in Concord, New Hampshire, where they also resided. Irving served as First Reader and Mary served as Second Reader for Christian Science church services in Concord from 1899 until 1906, initially in Christian Science Hall and later in First Church of Christ, Scientist, Concord, New Hampshire, which was dedicated in 1904. Mary also served on the Board of Directors of the church in Concord as well as on the Committee on Business of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts.
