Julia C. Underwood (c.1840-?) was born in Ohio and died in an unknown
location. She was the wife of Franklin J. Underwood, a wealthy bookkeeper who lived and
worked in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1884, she became interested in Christian Science and
most likely met with Mary Baker Eddy when she visited Chicago in May 1884. Underwood had
intended to study with Eddy at the Massachusetts Metaphysical College; instead, she
studied with A. J. Swarts, who had attended five days of Eddy's May 1884 Chicago class
and who established the Spiritual Science University in Chicago. After studying with
Swarts, Underwood returned to Memphis, where she maintained a healing practice until the
late 1890s.
