He got his start in publishing in 1862 at H. H. Bancroft & Co, a San Francisco, California, firm, and went on to found his own publishing company, James T. White Co., in 1869. Also in 1869 he married Florence C. White (b. Derby) in San Francisco. White relocated his company's headquarters to New York, New York, in 1886. It was best known for publishing The National Cyclopedia of American Biography, which continued publication until 1984 and ultimately contained over 60,000 entries in 63 volumes. An entry featuring Mary Baker Eddy was included in volume 3, published in 1893. Eddy was pleased with the entry, and she commended the volume to her followers.

In 1903 White succeeded to the directorship of his family's business concerns including Yost Typewriting Company, Onondaga Mining Company, Sulphrose Company, and West Coast Rubber Company. He also owned interests in several banks and businesses in New York. Among other writings, White composed and published five poetry collections between 1883 and 1917. He and Eddy engaged in extensive correspondence over many years and thereby developed a warm relationship. He had several of his poems published in The Christian Science Journal and dedicated two poems in his work Captive Memories to her. Eddy in turn wrote a poem for White that is included in Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, a copy of which she sent to him in 1897.
