Your prophecy that the Theologians wouldAs Written:wd try to crowd us out at the last moment was literally fulfilled. They did try, but failed. You were heard. God's voice rose high above the screams of error. Joseph Cook was put forward as the mouthpiece of the Theological conspirators, with the result that he was obliged to address an audience of not less than 3500 - 2/3 of whom were Christian ScientistsAs Written:C.S's; he was compelled to listen to your magnificent address, your invincible As Written: invicible logic, under which he squirmed and winced; he succeeded in getting his picture right in the midst of your address, and thus was he surrounded by Truth. I think this Cook episode was one of the most striking demonstrations of the whole matter.
The Dr did grandly in his opening address, both as to matter & manner Let it not be again said that "he has no voice." It was heard throughout the hall.
The demonstration on the whole was a grand one, but, I suppose, we could hardly hope that there wouldAs Written:wd not be some mishaps.
We had to meet this alternative: the address must go into the newspapers. Their reporters were there with instructions to report; we must either rely on their garbled work, or give them correct copies. The Dr. Mr K & myself concluded it was best to give them copies, which we did in full, with the explanatory addendum As Written: addedum attached. What was my chagrin when they appeared with it left out & it appeared to be my address.
What was to be done? Saw Mr K & Dr. We concluded it must be counteracted by a communication from me. I prepared one, and went to the dailies which had published the address & requested the managing editor of each to publish it as a part of the proceedings of the Congress, the next day. I kept the original in my hands until it was read, then brought it to my room, put in the explanatory heading, sealed it & gave it to Mr K.
He thinks it will go in intact, as the great number of ScientistsEditorial Note: Christian Scientists present made a deep impression on Dr Barrows & he will have an eye out to the pecuniary As Written: pecuniry aspect of it. Mr K. however, will watch it closely, and I think his wisdom, alertness, and vigilance thus far have been remarkable. To keep the whole matter, including our great crowd, in hand was no small task & we have worked day & night. As to "the Allegory," Mr K. could get no promise from the chief reporter that it wouldAs Written:w'd be published in full, and we thought a garbled report wouldAs Written:w'd render it meaningless, and so thought that it had better be withheld entirely.
