My Dear Teacher

The express package has just reached me -

(Thursday, 430 p.m)

I feel that there is nothing for me to do, but to comply with your request, although As Written: altho I should have been very glad if I might have retired and left the remaining work to be done by someoneAs Written:some one else

I shall keep the extract of the addressEditorial Note: Mary Baker Eddy’s address to the World's Parliament of Religions at The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. , under seal until I am obliged to put it into the hands of the Editor, and I will follow the matter up until it is properly printed and in the bookEditorial Note: John Henry Barrows, The History of the World’s Parliament of Religions, 2 vols. (Chicago: Parliament Publishing Company, 1893)..

I do not know about rights, and privileges As Written: priveleges under the copyrightAs Written:copy right laws but it occurs to me that it might be well for you to write a permit, authorizing "The Parliament Publishing Co" to publish this extract in their book.

I will observe all of your directions concerning this paper.

I understand your letterEditorial Note: See L07431. to mean that without wishing it to be known among the students, you approve in a general way of having the remainder of the contribution of Christian Scientists to the book, made up of parts of the best of the papers read in the CongressEditorial Note: This is in reference to the World's Parliament of Religions at The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. As part of the Parliament events, a Congress of Christian Science was also held, and some of Eddy's students read papers on Christian Science. and I also understand it to suggest that I shall attend to this, subject to the consent of the Committee

The Doctor wrote me a letter, and indicated in some degree what portion of the papers would be of the best service, namely his addressEditorial Note: Ebenezer J. Foster Eddy, president of the National Christian Scientist Association, read an opening address at the Christian Science Congress on September 20, 1893. as PresidentAs Written:Prest – and the papers by Judge Hanna & Mr. Farlow

I will write to BostonEditorial Note: Boston, Massachusetts tonightAs Written:to night for such papers as are thought suitable-

The Doctor, in his letter does not give me any definite instructions, and as the subject now stands considerable is left to my discretion.

I understand that you do not want to superintend the detail of this work, but if any suggestion occurs to you, please advise me-

It seems to me that when our subject matter is all made up, it ought to show forth the distinctive features of our, faith, and our works, namely. That Christianity is the religion of salvation!

That true christianity is manifested in the imitation of Christ, in healing the sick and casting out evilsMatt 10:8 Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give. ; that this disappearance of evil is in consequence of the action of the "Mind that was in Christ Jesus"Phil 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: and in perfect accord with natural law etc

It seems as though there should be enough of the ground covered to induce the reader to look into "Science & HealthEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy" for a more ample statement-

In order to do this, it might be desirable to glean from any of the papers, such items as would constitute when aggregated, a simple indication of what christian science means

In other words, would it not be well to join the best fragments, together for the common good.

Some of the papers have nothing in them of service, in the way of making known what the people need to know,, and by the way the inquiries on the part of the people at large are very frequent, and indicate a rapidly spreading interest I learned todayAs Written:to day that, prior to the ParliamentEditorial Note: The World's Parliament of Religions at The World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois, Mrs Gesterfeld, applied to Dr Barrows for permission to speak before the CongressEditorial Note: As part of the Parliament events, a Christian Science Congress was also held, and some of Eddy's students read papers on Christian Science.- and that in reply he told her he could only refer her to me, the Agent of the only Christian Scientists they recognized

Unless you should tell me that you do not want me to do so, I will advise you as to what has been selected for the book before it is presented to the Editor-

He is ready for our part now and we must not delay but a few days longer Hoping that I may be able to do what is right and that God may be honored in all these ways

I remain your affectionate Student
Edwd.A. Kimball

PS-

Since writing the above, last evening it occurs to me to say that if I am to do anythingAs Written:any thing more than to perform in a perfunctory way, according to specific instructions, the consequence would be that considerable responsibility would rest on me because of the exercise of discretionary authority.

It seems therefore that if I have to prepare & arrange the report, I ought to have the privilege As Written: privelege of submitting the report to you before it is printed so that you can pass judgment on it and reject or change any part of it.

It is true, that the abominations in the name of Christian Science should no longer find their way into print - and it would be extremely offensive to have anythingAs Written:any thing of the kind in this work, the first Edition of which is to be 25,000 copies

Your paper is headed -

"Extracts from a copyrighted address by the founder of Christian Science, read before the Worlds Parliament of Religions, by Judge S. J. Hanna"

Would you object to having an addition made so that it may read-

"Extracts from a copyrighted address by the founder of Christian Science read by Judge S. J. Hanna before the "Advisory Council of the Worlds Parliament of Religions in the Hall of Columbus, Sept 22d"

My object is to have this heading include the historical reference as added. It is not essential - of course, but if you approve, it would do away with the necessity for any other explanation
