Editorial Title: Silas J. Sawyer to Mary Baker Eddy, December 17, 1883
Author: Silas J. Sawyer
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: December 17, 1883
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Silas J. Sawyer on the printed stationery of his dental practice, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Editorial Note: Sawyer is replying to a letter (not extant) dated December 15, 1883, that he received from Mary Baker Eddy. He tells her that he misunderstood the type of instruction in Christian Science he would receive from her in Boston, thinking that she gave one-on-one instruction to students, rather than teaching them in a class. He emphasizes to Eddy that he cannot afford to be away from Milwaukee for any extent of time, as he is dependent on his dental practice for income and, of course, will not have any patients while he is in Boston. Eddy has invited Sawyer's wife, Jennie E. Sawyer, to accompany him to Boston to be taught. He asks if Eddy would make an exception in their case and teach him and his wife individually if they came to Boston at once and not require them to be in a class. He asks that she reply by telegram when she receives his letter. He also asks Eddy for details about lodging, board, etc. that are available there. Finally, Sawyer has heard from Fannie M. Silsbee that she has corresponded with Eddy about coming to Boston to be taught, and he feels she should wait until a later time. (Sawyer studied with Mary Baker Eddy in a class that began on December 27, 1883.)
