This letter may cause a little surprise, coming from Milwaukee, when you may suppose I am in Indianapolis. I am only here for a short time; expecting to return to Indianapolis and continue our work there, which we think is well begun. We have a great field before us, and are confident of success in Him who is our strength. SomeoneAs Written:Some one sends me a "Philosophical Journal"Editorial Note: The Religio-Philosophical Journal. containing the article by Mr Gill - Truly did you prophesy of the coming of this event. How a professing Christian Scientist, expects to remove evil or sin, by going before the world and making complaints, is, or would be a mystery to me, if I did not see in it the A– M– of mortal mind. Mad ambition ever urging, us on to build up a personal evil, or a personal god. I can truly say, I am sorry, very sorry for one of such marked abilities, to use those abilities for the cause of unrighteousness. Can they not see that if Christian Science is not of God, it will fall of its own weight of error, but if it is of God, all the world of evil cannot harm it, or disturb its true and faithful followers?
We have had to be very watchful here, and meet the bitter attacks of malice through the work of Mrs Clarke. It has now developed that she was slyly teaching some people what she called C- S–Editorial Note: Christian Science. These people have since met students of ours, but not a word do they mention of C- S– but studiously avoid the subject. Mrs Clarke claims she has taught them truth and love, "there is no need of teaching about error or sin," Poor woman she is so completely in the grasp of error, that she cannot see that she has filled these people so full of error, that when they meet Truth, they do not know what greeting to give it, and so remain silent before it. We have every reason to believe Mrs Clarke has made an attempt to make trouble between Mr Adams and us, by poisoning the mind of a student of Miss Brown's, a Miss Tobey. We shall let it develop As Written: develope until we have proof, and will then speak.
We are confident now that her main object in going to you was to get a certificate.from you, and flourish it, for no good to the CauseEditorial Note: The cause of Christian Science., but to gratify her personal and selfish ambition.
Mr Gill's fling at me as his "colleague on the Journal" fell very flat, if he intended to strike me; for every effort I put forth while in B-Editorial Note: Boston whether in relation to Mr Gill or others, sprang from the one desire, to help them. The motive prompting all my work in B. I have left with HimEditorial Note: God who knows, and the good that is there He alone can adjust, make it appear in its proper place and time. I am sure of one thing, I did not leave Boston with any ill will to any, but cherish that love which all the powers of Satan cannot take away from me. A short time since we heard by way of Grand Rapids, MichiganAs Written:Mich. that "Mrs Eddy and Dr Sawyer did not agree, and that was why he left Boston". I think I know from whence such a report started. Shall I do anything about it, further than I have,- denying it.? I enclose an order or draft $97.3 5 Editorial Note: $97.35 in 1887 is the equivalent of $3,212.71 in 2024. for S & HEditorial Note: Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy ordered by telegraph, and hope, yes expect to repeat it more frequently soon. Again, with assurances of fidelity to the Cause, not only from us, but Mrs Sawyer and Mr Stahl. (two more faithful workers cannot be found) we subscribe ourselves,
