Editorial Title: Jennie E. Sawyer to Mary Baker Eddy, March 4, 1884
Author: Jennie E. Sawyer
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: March 4, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Jennie E. Sawyer on lined paper from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Editorial Note: Sawyer writes Mary Baker Eddy a long letter that she hopes will not weary Eddy. She asks a lot of questions of Eddy regarding the practice of Christian Science, including handling mental malpractice and opposition to Christian Science. Should she handle malpractice at the beginning of every Christian Science treatment she gives? She finds that if she does not do this, her patients experience pain and pressure in their heads and sometimes chills and fever. And then she herself experiences the same symptoms. Sawyer also asks Eddy if it is possible to "overtreat" a patient, and uses an illustration of ruining baking powder biscuits by putting too much effort into making them. Finally, Sawyer hopes that Fannie M. Silsbee, who is currently studying with Eddy in Boston, will choose to practice in Chicago when she returns, rather than in Milwaukee, as her work in Milwaukee has not been commendable.
