Accession: 304.43.004
Editorial Title: Caroline D. Noyes to Mary Baker Eddy, February 18, 1884
Author: Caroline D. Noyes
Recipient: Mary Baker Eddy
Date: February 18, 1884
Manuscript Description: Handwritten by Caroline D. Noyes on embossed lined paper from Chicago, Illinois.
Archival Note: Caroline D. Noyes was a student in Mary Baker Eddy's class that began on February 25, 1884.
Editorial Note: Noyes tells Mary Baker Eddy that Bradford Sherman brought her a telegram he had received from Eddy. In the telegram, Eddy apparently asks if Noyes is planning to be in Eddy's class that begins on February 25, 1884. Noyes is replying to Eddy that she will gladly come to the class if Eddy can reduce the price for Noyes to $50.00 ($1,384.45 in 2017). Noyes says that her practice of Christian Science has ruined her financially, as she had barely practiced it for a month when she was attacked by mesmerism and has been a constant victim of it ever since. She attributes her inability to overcome the mesmerism to the fact that she had not been taught Christian Science correctly to begin with. It has also cost her her home and the companionship of her husband, Gideon P. Noyes.

Dear Madam

Dr Sherman brought me your telegram this afternoon in reply I will say that I should be very glad to come and have always intended to do so at some time but Metaphysics has been more damage to me financially than it has income for I was struck with mesmerism before I had practiced a month and I have been a constant victim to it ever since through the lack of proper instruction in the first place.

Through my love of the Science I have sacrificed my home and the Companionship of my Husband for nearly a years time. I knew I should have to make sacrifices but I did not know what I should have to meet — But what I would say is this It will cost me one hundred dollarsEditorial Note: $100.00 in 1884 is equivalent to $2,768.90 in 2017. for my fare and other expenses at least but if you would take me for fifty dollarsEditorial Note: $50.00 in 1884 is equivalent to $1,384.45 in 2017. as you have sometimes done others I will gladly come. answer by telegraph and if the terms are satisfactory I will gladly come and will start Friday morning —

Yours truly

Mrs G. P. Noyes
